For all of the changes made during development of the project, still others were made after the film’s initial release. Having watched from the projection booth as even invited guests left before the end of early screenings of the original 156-minute version, Kubrick privately expressed his irritation at watching the sight of the Star Child’s enormous eyes gazing at their backs as they head up towards the exit, and subsequently cut seventeen minutes from the film before its wide release. The director had already excised huge chunks of dialogue – mostly voice-over narration – prior to the initial release, including what Frederick I Ordway III, the film’s scientific adviser, described as ‘several pages of superb and absolutely required dialogue, without which nothing that happens later can make much sense’.43 Kubrick, however, did not agree. ‘I don’t believe that the trims made a crucial difference,’44 he commented. ‘I think it just affected some marginal people. The people who like it, like it no matter what its length, and the same holds true for the people who hate it.’
Scenes shortened, modified or excised during Kubrick’s overnight re-edit included:
the ‘Dawn of Man’ sequence showing the apes reacting to the monolith was shortened;
the Orion III docking manoeuvres and footage of the space station were also trimmed;
the scene showing the astronauts exercising in Discovery’s centrifuge was shortened;
Frank Poole’s space pod leaving Discovery and his ‘breathing’ sequence outside the spacecraft were both trimmed;
a sequence showing Hal powering down Poole’s radio before the computer terminated him was deleted;
the scene in which someone buys a bush baby for Dr Floyd’s daughter (played by five-year-old Vivian Kubrick) at a 21st-century Harrods store was cut;
another major sequence showing families aboard the space station – including shots of Kubrick’s other two daughters at their easels – was also removed;
a one-second flashback of the monolith was added to the scene in which Moonwatcher discovers the bone tool.
